Libyan Desert Glass

A selection of rare pieces of this natural glass from the Great Sand Sea, Western Sahara Desert,
Egypt. Northern Africa.

Libyan glass is a kind of Tektite made up of a very pure form of silica. Some examples have been analysed and found to contain significant levels of Iridium in their makeup. Tektite is the name given to a variety of differing kinds of solidified natural glasses found scattered over large areas at a number of locations worldwide. They are generally accepted to be the result of rock melting from the earth surface mixed with traces of the meteorite itself. In certain cases the impact crater is evident but, as with Libyan Glass, evidence of the crater is missing. Presently, the generally accepted explanation for the existance of libyan glass is that an explosion took place above the earth surface vaporizing the silica which makes up the desert sand and forming these natural glass relicts.


All the pieces you see below have been self collected by a close friend who has visited the area on exploration work over the last few years.

There is a chip to one side which acts as a "window" to the interior of the piece where the inclusions can be seen in greater detail. Very nice piece.
